May in the apiary

  • Regular weekly inspections and records.
  • Continue checks for occupied queen cells and take swarm control measures if necessary
  • Have spare equipment ready
  • Find, mark and clip queens
  • Replace frames of old/irregular/mouldy comb or move them to outer frames of boxes, ready for replacement.
  • Shook swarm or Bailey frame change any colonies needing complete comb replacement.
  • Add supers ahead of bees requirements
  • Extract ripe Oil Seed Rape Honey
  • Remember to continue writing articles for the newsletter; every little helps!

The Association maintains an apiary at an organic farm in North Shropshire. We hold regular meetings at the apiary during the summer, where members old and new can gain experience in handling bees.
